Accidents on Farms and How to prevent them

  • Accidents involving tractors, agricultural vehicles or machinery account for over half of all farm fatalities.
  • Being hit by a tractor or a vehicle in the farm yard is the most frequently reported accident. Reducing speed is by far the best preventative measure you can take to stop this type of accident. Paying attention to blind spots and ensuring children are behind inaccessible gates will make your farm yard a safer place.
  • Make sure that machinery is properly attached to the vehicle before setting off.
  • Stack bales of straw, hay and silage safely and securely- toppling could so easily crush somebody. It is estimated by Teagasc that 5% of farm deaths are caused by falling bales.
  • Secure unused vehicles – prevent them from rolling as well as preventing somebody (a child) from starting them accidentally.
